As a part of our ongoing work with the University of South Florida, Gresham Smith was called on to re-envision the school’s former TV studio into the new home for its digital storytelling team. For this project, we worked with the video and multimedia team to determine their specific goals for performance and aesthetics in a space they call their office as well as their studio and classroom area. The result is a unique and flexible space—complete with two editing rooms, two faculty labs, a recording room, a sound room, a classroom and offices—for a team that has a lot of stories to tell.

USF’s Innovative Education Studios

Open and Flexible

USF’s Digital Learning team uses the space to develop content for a variety of audiences, including students in a traditional university setting, as well as the Innovative Education initiative, which supports USF’s commitment to bring lifelong learning to all of their students—from age 13 to 93. To accomplish their tasks, they needed a flexible new home with spaces to support developing content for today’s hybrid learning environment.

Tailored, Unique Spaces

Due to the nature of their work, the client had specific goals for performance and aesthetics. Specialty spaces, including the recording studio, sound booth and editing rooms, required visual acuity while maintaining proper acoustics for performance.

A Flexible Space to Connect

The multipurpose lounge doubles as a casual meeting space centered within the studio, surrounded by different types of workspaces, private offices and faculty labs.

Space to Create

Our design team worked with USF to curate an interesting palette of neutral materials and textures that would be visually interesting to shoot photography against without distracting from the content, including a shipping container-inspired set of “floating” offices.
