Revitalizing Military Healthcare

Covering approximately 16,000 acres of land, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is located in southern Georgia. Working with The Korte Company, Gresham Smith provided professional services for the full renovation of the facility’s 61,500-square-foot Branch Health Clinic, which accommodates 200 staff members and serves close to 11,000 military personnel and their dependents. The extensive renovation and modernization project comprised the complete removal and replacement of the clinic’s existing interiors, including all interior partitions, finishes, plumbing, medical/dental gases, HVAC systems and electrical systems.

Complicating both the design and construction process was the clinic’s need to remain operational throughout the two-year construction period. To mitigate impact to daily operations, our team developed a seven-phase plan to enable the clinic to remain occupied and fully operational during the renovation. We also developed infection control plans to protect patients, staff and visitors during each phase of construction. To further add to the overall project complexity, the project targeted LEED Silver certification, which required us to incorporate a number of sustainability features to comply with the LEED certification requirements.

The fully renovated Branch Health Clinic continues to provide active duty personnel and their families with high-quality patient care in a more modern and efficient space. Upgraded departments include behavioral health, immunizations, education and training, information management, logistics, medical administration, undersea medicine, optometry, pathology, pharmacy, physical therapy, preventive medicine, radiology, dental and administrative support functions.
