Experiential Design and Wayfinding

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is known as the gateway for Broward County and the South Florida region. Gresham Smith was tasked with developing the airport’s Signage and Wayfinding Master Plan in tandem with our work on FLL’s terminal modernization and redevelopment program. The end result is the implementation of a cohesive and consistent signage and wayfinding program across FLL’s roadways, garages, curbsides and terminals that vastly improves the passenger experience.

I Saw the Sign

The roadway system at FLL carries high daily traffic volumes and comprises multiple destinations, decision points, lane splits, and horizontal and vertical curves that result in limited sight distances. Our roadway signage solution promotes safe and efficient navigation across the entire airport site, including large overhead digital signs that replace static signage and feature a color display of airline names and logos for immediate brand recognition. Digital signage provides flexibility for the airport, since adjustments can easily be made as operations change.

Where to First?

Our curbside signage includes large-scale numbers mounted on canopies that serve as identifying elements for the terminals and are clearly visible to motorists from a distance. Replacing existing static signage, digital airline listing signs along the terminals indicate appropriate drop-off points for departing passengers. This enhancement to the guest experience provides FLL with the ability to keep pace with airlines changes in real time.

Where’s My Gate?

Our signage and wayfinding program for FLL’s four passenger terminals supports a logical decision-making process for both arriving and departing passengers, with information being provided at the right time in the right place, and in a format that is clearly understandable. Not only is this pivotal outside the airport, but it’s important inside the facility as well, as a gate either represents a passenger’s starting point or their final destination.

Where’s My Car?

Pedestrian-level signage indicates garage entrances along pedestrian walkways and is visible from the terminals across from the airport roadway. Overhead vehicular directionals are located at key decision points within the garage. We color-coded all levels of the airport’s parking garages so passengers can easily remember where they parked their cars. Additionally, Clearly marked directional signage leads arriving passengers from the terminal to Ground Transportation areas and individual modes of transportation, including taxis and rideshare.
