Reimagining the Entire Airport in an Active Construction Zone
To expedite Terminal 1’s modernization and expansion, the project was divided into two phases: the new Concourse A project and renovations of the existing Terminal 1. This meant that the modernization and repurposing of the space was completed while maintaining operations, including security screening. Gresham Smith embraced the challenge and provided complete project management, architecture, interior design, structural engineering, and environmental graphics and wayfinding services for the existing Terminal 1 facility.
Additionally, Gresham Smith was responsible for developing the standard for the entire airport while designing Terminal 1. By collaborating with an array of stakeholders, we created and implemented a wayfinding master plan as well as set the standard for restrooms, ceilings and finishes for the remainder of the facility.
Streamlining for Growth While Taking the Passenger Experience to New Heights
FLL needed to streamline operations in order to accommodate growth through efficiency, while also renovating the airport to upgrade the passenger experience. The modernization features an all-new 80,000-square foot airside court built above the existing baggage handling area. This required creative structural engineering solutions to enable construction above an active operation integral to maintain airport operations.
Broward County Aviation Department envisioned Terminal 1 as the first step in connecting all buildings airside. This airside court optimizes passenger circulation by connecting Concourses A, B and C with intuitive wayfinding elements in addition to new concessions, new restrooms, and a new centralized 12-lane security checkpoint. The centralized checkpoint supports long-term growth and streamlines passenger throughput and circulation.
A Brand New Concourse
The project also includes an entirely new Concourse A, which houses five new swing gates for flexibility of international and domestic arrivals. The project was completed for FLL through Southwest Airlines, which we provided structural engineering and environmental graphic and wayfinding design services as a subconsultant to Corgan Associates.
