Located on a 25-acre site at the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center campus near the Cypress Landing veterans Housing, the new facility will reduce travel times for patients by eliminating the Hampton Roads and Monitor-Merrimack Bridge-tunnels from the equation. Patient parking at the front of the site will enable easy access for visitors, while dedicated staff parking and entry on the rear of the building will increase efficiencies.
The 196,000-square-foot, two-story building will reflect the surrounding region, taking cues from coastal culture to honor Hampton Roads as the home to the world’s largest naval base. On the exterior, a large linear expanse of glazing will mimic the shape of an aircraft carrier, while the covered drop-off area on the front of the building will resemble ship masts.
To promote wellness and connect patients, visitors and staff to nature, the design will capitalize on the existing wetlands to create outdoor seating areas, al-fresco dining and a healing garden in a park-like setting. Staff will have access to a dedicated outdoor space and multiple balconies for respite during breaks. To create further connections to nature, the interior palette will use cool earth tones and wood elements throughout the design. Additionally, floor-to ceiling windows in the main lobby, combined with large windows on all sides of the building, will flood the space with natural light.
