The new five-story, 210,000-square-foot ambulatory care center for Cooper Green Mercy Health in Birmingham, Alabama, replaces the organization’s outdated 1970s-era clinical building. This modern facility is designed to support the healthcare needs of the local community, focusing not only on treatment but also on preventative care and wellness. The comprehensive range of services provided in the new space helps foster healthier lifestyles and social connection, ultimately expanding the impact on the underserved of the community.

The center houses 18 clinics, including primary and specialty care, urgent care, physical and occupational therapy, imaging, dental care, and laboratory services. As a resource for the community, the facility places a strong emphasis on preventative care and wellness beyond traditional healthcare. The expanded rehabilitation suite includes an outdoor terrace that features a terrain park for mobility and balance training, a turf area for yard games and yoga, and a basketball hoop to encourage social interaction and participation in healthy activities. Education spaces are available for programs focused on disease prevention, management, and nutrition. Additionally, a walking trail around the campus encourages physical activity and relaxation, reinforcing the center’s mission to improve community health.

Designed with openness and connection in mind, the facility features large windows throughout, allowing natural light to flow into the space. The main concourse serves as a vibrant community hub, featuring a retail pharmacy, gift shop, and open waiting areas. These elements create a space that is as much about community engagement as it is about healthcare, making the new center an invaluable resource for Birmingham residents and beyond.

As homage to a handmade quilt gifted to Cooper Green for the centennial of indigent care, the design pulls from the multi-generational connections and the culture of storytelling often associated with quilts. An extensive local art collection and colorful, multi-dimensional mural in the main lobby weave stories of the community throughout the building, reinforcing a sense of authenticity and personal experience. The new building both honors the center’s legacy and reinforces the mission of providing high quality healthcare to the underserved.
