Opened in 2024, the first phase of the Chattahoochee RiverLands project provides unprecedented access to the portion of the Chattahoochee River south of I-285 in Cobb County, Georgia, giving residents and visitors the opportunity to see, interact with, and experience nature in a new and unique way. For the project, Gresham Smith’s multidisciplinary team of planners, engineers and landscape architects delivered a multi-faceted trail with features including a paved shared-use path, a boardwalk that spans scenic wetlands, a soft surface trail, and an education nook situated above a river overlook. It’s the first fully realized segment of the landmark Chattahoochee RiverLands greenway study, bringing a bold regional vision to fruition. Ultimately, the study aims to connect 19 metro Atlanta cities and seven counties to the Chattahoochee River and to each other with a greenway trail of connecting parks, overlooks, access points, and trailheads.
