As part of its mission to develop near-term, practical solutions to problems faced by airport operators, Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) officials selected Gresham Smith to develop uniform guidance for the use of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies by a broad spectrum of users to provide advanced ground access information to travelers. Gresham Smith led the development of ACRP Report 70: Guidebook for Implementing Intelligent Transportation Systems Elements to Improve Airport Traveler Access Information with support from Texas Transportation Institute (TTI), Big Sky, Inc. and The Savant Group (SGI).
The use of ITS websites, handheld devices, dynamic message signs and other applications, including multi-user flight information displays, can enhance the overall customer experience through improved real-time information sharing. While many metropolitan areas currently have or are working to implement advanced traveler information systems, very few of these systems address ground access requirements that are specific to airport travelers.
Based on the data collected, opportunities exist to enhance ground access trips to and from airports through the integration of static and real-time information. Airport travelers want real-time information related to parking availability, access delays and alternative travel modes, and they want that information available across a wide range of applications and devices. The guidebook helps airport personnel assess their current situation and identify customer and operational needs that may be addressed through the provision of advanced traveler information technologies.
