Gresham Smith Selected to Design Long-Term Care Facility for Home of the Innocents

New Facility Will Enrich Lives of Residents with Comfort and Empowerment

Gresham Smith is excited to announce that the firm has been selected to design the multi-phase interior renovations and exterior expansions for the Louisville-based nonprofit, the Home of the Innocents (HOTI). The planned renovations and expansions will provide HOTI with the space to further transform communities through the mission to provide compassion, wellness, empowerment and excellence for individuals and families.

The project includes the expansion and renovation of the existing entry lobby and the various neighborhoods within the Kosair Charities Pediatric Convalescent Center (KCPCC). The lobby will be expanded under the existing roof structure by 400 square feet and will include a security office, storage spaces, and a training kitchen. Over 70,000 square feet across three floors of residents’ rooms will be renovated with new casework, lighting, and finishes, while new office and staff spaces will be provided in each wing to be more functional for care services.

Additionally, a new 52-bed long term care facility will provide age-appropriate accommodations and care for young adults with complex medical issues who have aged out of the pediatric center but are not yet eligible for geriatric care.

“Our team is extremely excited to be collaborating with Home of the Innocents to create a facility that will enrich the lives of the residents and enable comfort, empowerment, and happiness,” commented Healthcare Senior Interior Designer, Penny Houchens, IIDA, LEED AP, NCIDQ.

The project is anticipated to be completed in the fall 2026.
