Gresham Smith is proud to announce that the bridge replacement at Willeo Road over Willeo Creek near the Cobb County/Fulton County line opened to traffic this spring.
Gresham Smith served as the lead engineering and design firm for the bridge replacement and roadway improvements and helped oversee public engagement efforts with the local community. The firm worked directly with Cobb County and also coordinated a collaborative effort with the City of Roswell in Fulton County as the roadway connects the two counties.
The design effort results in an upgraded gateway into Cobb County that carries two lanes of traffic and also provides multimodal upgrades for pedestrians and cyclists. Gresham Smith has designed a number of infrastructure improvements in the area, including the adjacent roundabout at Lower Roswell and Timber Ridge Road.
“We’re proud of our effort to deliver a new bridge and gateway for the East Cobb and Roswell communities,” said Sarah Blackburn, P.E., Georgia Roadway Design Department Leader at Gresham Smith. “This project delivers a much needed bridge upgrade and provides improved connections for vehicular traffic, pedestrians and cyclists traveling between the two counties.”
The new bridge is expected to have a design life of at least 75 years with low long-term maintenance costs. It continues the cross-section of Lower Roswell Road in Cobb County onto Willeo Road with a multi-use path, sidewalk and bicycle lanes. The proposed design avoids any impact to the adjacent National Park Service property, and minimize impact to existing utilities, including a major sewer line that runs parallel to the bridge on its own support structure, which was not disrupted during design and construction.
