Gresham Smith Announces Completion of HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood Medical Center

Expansion and Renovation Project Built on Design Foundations of Existing Facility

Gresham Smith is excited to announce the completion of the new surgery department expansion and renovation at the HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood Medical Center in Kingwood, Texas. Gresham Smith provided architecture, interior design and signage and wayfinding services for the project.

The innovative project, comprised of 8,000 square feet of newly constructed space and 15,000 square feet of renovated existing space, is expanding critical surgical care services in one of the fastest growing regions in the country.

The newly designed Outpatient Surgery Department boasts four advanced operating rooms, two endoscopy suites, eight post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) spaces, and nine pre-operative rooms, all set within a thoughtfully reconfigured layout. The department also features a dedicated waiting area for patients and families, ensuring a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Located in what was originally designed to be a shopping mall, the unique challenge of converting the building into a state-of-the-art healthcare facility required extensive upgrades to meet hospital standards. The project team worked diligently to address these challenges while focusing on creating a seamless flow from patient towers to the new outpatient spaces. These efforts included modernizing and right-sizing operations, expanding the central sterile department to accommodate a growing number of patients, and separating outpatient and inpatient services for improved operational efficiency and patient experience.

The design of the Outpatient Surgery Department emphasizes a warm, clean, and bright atmosphere, honoring regional influences and creatively building upon the hospital’s existing aesthetics for a cohesive look and feel throughout the facility.

“Throughout the design process, our team focused on creating an intuitive experience for visitors, driven by innovative solutions for a unique space and layout,” said Healthcare Project Executive Nilanjana Snyder, AIA, LEED AP. “The expanded facility empowers staff to deliver comprehensive care and support, while also enabling patients to heal in a calm, comfortable environment.”
