Deer Creek Sanitary Tunnel and Pump Station Project Wins ASCE St. Louis 2024 Project of the Year Award

Vital Sewer System Improvement Project is Recognized for Engineering Excellence

Gresham Smith is proud to announce that Water + Environment’s Deer Creek Sanitary Tunnel and Pump Station won the ASCE St. Louis 2024 Project of the Year Award. This award recognizes the engineering project that demonstrates the greatest engineering skills and contribution to the field of civil engineering and the community.

The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD), the fourth-largest sewer utility in the U.S., selected Gresham Smith to design the $39.2 million deep pump station, with work beginning in the summer of 2020. The large-scale project included the final lining of the wet well and dry well shafts, the effluent vault, the pumps, piping, two buildings, elevators and electrical and programming controls for the station. The firm’s innovative solution not only redefined the design of a traditional deep pump station, but also the type of software used in its development. The end result is a cost-effective, resilient and flexible design solution capable of dewatering the 48-million-gallon Deer Creek Sanitary Tunnel in less than 48 hours.
