Gresham Smith Continues Water Infrastructure Enhancements Across Alabama

Pump Station and Rehabilitation Projects Will Enhance Sewer System

Gresham Smith drives major progress in Birmingham and beyond!

The firm is excited to report significant progress on a range of water and wastewater infrastructure projects throughout Alabama, continuing our commitment to improving vital public services across the state. From pump station upgrades to sewer rehabilitation projects, the Gresham Smith team is working closely with local municipalities and utility districts to deliver long-lasting solutions that increase capacity and extend the life of critical infrastructure.

“Every project is an opportunity to create lasting value for the communities we serve,” said Caleb Wilson, P.E., a project engineer in Gresham Smith’s Water + Environment market. “The City of Hoover Applecross Pump Station is one of those projects. We are thrilled to announce it is now close to completion.”

The comprehensive upgrades at the Applecross Pump Station involved replacing the existing 0.5 MGD station with new, advanced parts and creates a new enclosure to house the mechanical equipment. Gresham Smith’s scope of work included detailed design services, geotechnical surveys, and final electrical engineering and bidding services.

In Jefferson County, contractors recently broke ground on four pump stations as part of the Jefferson County Environmental Services Department’s infrastructure upgrade efforts. Three of the four stations will undergo complete replacement, with Gresham Smith providing services for site, structural, mechanical and electrical improvements. Each station, ranging from 200 to 500 GPM, will be upgraded to enhance performance and extend its operational life.

In Tuscaloosa, the City has selected Gresham Smith for the design and rehabilitation of the Garner Road gravity sewer and force main system. Currently in the design phase, the project involves lining 13,000 feet of large-diameter pipe and maintenance holes with corrosion-resistant materials and upgrading air release valves to increase the longevity of the force main.

Meanwhile, the firm is providing professional services for the Bessemer Shades Valley sewer transfer project, which is currently in the property acquisition phase. The comprehensive initiative will address capacity limitations in the existing trunk sewer and reduce sanitary sewer overflows. The project is exploring potential solutions such as tunneling, large siphon systems and vortex flow controls.

Gresham Smith is also finalizing designs for pump station upgrades at Collegeville, Alemeda, Cunningham No. 1, Don Berri and Trussville 2. These improvements, set to go to bid later this year, will include new submersible pumps, backup generators, wet well rehabilitations and utility upgrades to improve efficiency and reliability.

With a strong commitment to enhancing Alabama’s water and wastewater infrastructure, Gresham Smith is proud to contribute to these transformative projects that will benefit communities for generations to come.
