Gresham Smith is excited to announce Dexter Carty, an interior designer in our Healthcare market, who found his way to our firm during his good old college years. Originally a bank teller, we’re glad we captured Dexter’s talents and get to work face-to-face with him, instead of through a glass window.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up on a small island called Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Eastern Caribbean.
Where did you go to school?
I went to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where I got my Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture.
What drew you to Gresham Smith?
During college, one of my classmates was working with the firm at the time. She convinced me that Gresham would be a great place to work, and the rest is history.
What is your favorite project you’ve worked on while at Gresham Smith and why?
My favorite project is the HealthSouth Corporation Rehabilitation Hospital in Ludlow, Massachusetts. This was the first project that I was ever involved in from initial planning to completion, and also my first LEED certified project.
What achievement are you most proud of and why?
My wife and four children because my family gives me purpose and inspires me daily.
What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?
The best advice I ever received was from my mom. She told me that whatever I do, always put God first.
If you weren’t in your current profession what would you be doing?
Out on the water, fishing with my dad in Anguilla.
What’s on your bucket list?
I want to take a trip to Australia to have the opportunity to be up close with a Great White Shark. Although, I’m not sure exactly how close…
Who would you most like to meet and why?
I would like to meet my paternal grandfather who died when my father was a teenager. He was a white Irishman who fell in love and had 3 children with my black grandmother. I would like to ask about the courage it took to follow your heart even when it may not be accepted or popular. I admire that courage.
