Industrial Technical Practice Leader Jennifer T. Carr, AIA, NCARB, BECxP, LEED AP, has been named Gresham Smith’s office leader in Birmingham, Alabama, and she has relocated to Birmingham effective Jan. 1, 2024.
In this role, Carr will oversee operations and community engagement for the Birmingham office, which includes more than 30 professionals in Building Engineering, Healthcare, Industrial, Transportation and Water + Environment. Each of the firm’s markets also has dedicated leaders who oversee operations and business development in their respective areas. Carr will continue to lead Industrial, while the other leaders are Greg Robinson (Building Engineering), Edward Alonso (Healthcare), Blair Perry (Transportation) and Kent Hartzog (Water + Environment).
Carr will also take ownership of key local relationships, including the Birmingham Business Alliance, United Way of Central Alabama and REV Birmingham. An Auburn graduate, she will also actively recruit and promote the firm at local colleges and universities.
Carr started her career in Birmingham and joined the firm in 2007 as an architect in the Life and Work Places market and later transitioned to be a senior leader in Industrial. She also has a long history of collaborating and supporting colleagues in other markets, including Healthcare and Water + Environment. Her wealth of experience represents a broad spectrum of industrial, corporate and institutional facilities. As Industrial technical practice leader, she helps oversee project delivery, innovation, training and mentoring within the market, and she also serves as a senior architect for several key clients, including Blue Bell Creameries.
“We’re excited that Jennifer has decided to relocate to Birmingham to bolster and grow our firm’s presence there,” said Rodney Chester, CEO and board chair of Gresham Smith. “With her breadth of experience across multiple market sectors and great leadership skills, she will be a great representative for our firm and mentor for our Birmingham employees.”
The firm has had a presence in Birmingham since 1979 and recently moved into a new space at 2222 Arlington Avenue South. Other clients include UAB Medicine, Encompass Health Corporation, Alabama Department of Transportation, City of Helena, Birmingham Water Works Board and Jefferson County Department of Environmental Services.
Carr replaces Healthcare Project Executive Robert Murphy, Jr., AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, who is retiring this month.
