Overhead power transmission lines send large quantities of electricity, often to far-removed places, and are commonly used between power stations and substations. In this case, our utility design team was called on to assist our Industrial market in providing design services for the construction of a high-voltage overhead power transmission line and substation to provide power to a large battery plant facility.

Harnessing the Power of Drafting Software

The transmission line portion of the project included the detailed design of tie-lines connecting the high-voltage switchyard to the newly constructed substation. This was accomplished by utilizing powerful PLS-CADD overhead transmission line software for the design of both facilities.

Substation Design

The substation component of the project consisted of the comprehensive design of 138kV, high-side protection devices, as well as power transformers with grounding resistors, low-side potential transformers, and the transformation of a rigid aluminum bus distribution system into a metal-clad, medium-voltage switchgear enclosure housing multiple breakers.

Material specifications were developed for the breakers, the circuit switcher, the transformer and the switchgear house. Complete construction specifications were developed for the overall substation construction.

Meeting the Plants Safety & Electrical Needs

Analysis and calculations were performed on grounding, static protection and secondary oil containment to verify that all state and federal requirements—as well as required electrical safety codes—were met to ensure the safety of the site, personnel and equipment.

The new overhead transmission line and substation are now providing ample power to the meet the battery plant facility’s electricity needs. Our final design included grounding and static protection plans, detailed construction documents for the physical facility, secondary oil containment plans, wiring and schematic drawings and complete metal-clad switchgear house design documents.
