Gresham Smith Selected to Design $46 Million Expansion of Karmanos Cancer Institute and Proton Therapy Center at McLaren Flint Hospital

New Space Will Increase Patient Access to Advanced Radiation Therapy and Comprehensive Cancer Treatment

Gresham Smith is proud to announce that the firm has been selected to design a 22,000-square-foot, $46 million expansion to the Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Flint Hospital and the McLaren Proton Therapy Center in Flint, Michigan. The expansion is part of McLaren Flint’s continued commitment to provide comprehensive cancer care and advanced treatments close to home for the Genesee County community.

The project will include a 13,800-square-foot-vertical expansion of the cancer center, a 7,200-square-foot expansion of the proton therapy center, development of a third proton therapy vault with two patient treatment spaces, and parking lot and entry improvements. The additional square footage will bring all three of the hospital’s treatment modalities—medical oncology & hematology, surgical oncology, and radiation oncology—under one roof, increasing access to advanced technology and optimizing the patient experience through collaborative, streamlined care.

“Gresham Smith could not be more excited to have the opportunity to partner with McLaren Flint on this very important project,” said Healthcare Senior Vice President Dan White, FAIA, LEED AP, CLGB. “We’re designing the new spaces specifically with the patient in mind, because we want to reduce the stress that often accompanies cancer treatment. Our goal is to create an inviting, calming facility that is beneficial for patients, caregivers and staff.”

The McLaren Proton Therapy Center utilizes new treatment options from fixed beam rooms with onboard imaging to rotational gantries, all with pencil beam scanning. The technology also shields the patient from unnecessary radiation, lowering the risk of side effects. McLaren Flint previously expanded the hospital to meet the already high demand for proton therapy, but will now be able to double its’ capacity with the increased space.

The groundbreaking is expected to take place during the summer of 2022, and the expanded cancer center is expected to begin seeing patients in late 2023.
