Baptist Health of Northeast Florida’s Baptist Medical Center Beaches is the primary hospital-based, 24-hour emergency healthcare facility in the Jacksonville Beach community. As the area continued to experience growth, Baptist called on Gresham Smith to design an expansion and renovate spaces on the hospital’s campus. With a new, dedicated emergency department entrance, centrally-located pre-admission services and new surgery areas, Baptist Health has the space needed to provide quality care in a calm, comfortable environment.

Our team designed a new, dedicated emergency department entrance to provide a clear point of entry for patients, while a centrally located pre-admission area expedites the registration process and improves patient flow. We also created a new point of entry to the hospital’s labor and delivery unit, designing a corridor that floods the space with natural light and displays work from local artists.

The design team’s goal was to create a comfortable, hospitality-like environment that elevates the experience for patients and their families. The new waiting room was inspired by the surrounding beaches and features cool blues and greens, glass tile, undulating art panels and patterned floors. A conveniently located café has tables with USB charging ports as well as private seating areas.

The expansion created space for new pre-operative rooms, post-surgical bays, universally designed operating rooms, a sterile processing department and shared clean core. All operating room equipment is ceiling mounted, freeing up valuable floor space and one operating room is designed to accommodate a minimally invasive robotic surgery system. Vinyl flooring and hygienic wall panels promote patient safety, creating a seamless environment that can be easily maintained to protect patients from unwanted germs.
