Gresham Smith is excited to announce that Michael Bywaletz, P.E., has rejoined the firm as a senior transportation engineer in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Bywaletz has more than three decades of experience working across disciplines as a project manager leading a variety of complex transportation projects, specializing in drainage, hydraulics, erosion control and green infrastructure design. His experience includes all aspects of roadway design and plan development, drainage design, floodplain analysis and erosion control for multiple state departments of transportation as well as for numerous counties and municipalities throughout the Southeast.
“We’re thrilled to have Michael back at Gresham Smith, where he’s already contributing significantly to projects like the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor,” said Jason Brady, P.E., Cumberland regional transportation leader. “He bolsters our drainage team and brings new experience in areas such as green infrastructure design.”
In addition to serving as a business development leader, he’s also widely seen as a seasoned expert and mentor in the field of drainage and erosion control, and he will help grow this side of the practice across the market. Bywaletz holds active professional engineer licenses in six states, and he’s also a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC), a Level II Trainer and Design Professional for the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission, and a Level 3 Certified for Design of Erosion and Sediment Control Plans in North Carolina. Bywaletz is an active member in the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE), both as a past national director and current member of the National Finance and Technology committees, as well as a past president of ASHE Georgia and ASHE Carolina Piedmont Sections.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Central Florida. He lives with wife as empty nesters in Midland, North Carolina. Bywaletz also serves on the local Cabarrus County Planning and Zoning Commission Committee.
